Komando's Q&A: Update those GPS maps

Question: I'm considering updating my GPS maps. But I heard the GPS system's going to fail. Is this true?

Answer: The Global Positioning System includes 24 satellites, plus spares. Over time, satellites fail as well as must be replaced. A recent report warned that the system could become overloaded. Quality of service could deteriorate. The Air Force, which maintains the GPS, disputes that. The military relies on the GPS. So, I doubt the Air Force would let it fail. I'd update those maps. Roads change, and points of interest change. It's worth it.

Q: I use Microsoft Office on my Windows Vista machine. However, e-mail attachments open in WordPad. How could I make them open in Word?

A: Your file associations are out of whack. These tell Windows which programs open particular files. To modify the file associations, click Start, then Control Panel. Double-click Default Programs. Click "Associate a file type or protocol with a program." Re-associate many file types to open with Microsoft Word: .DOC, .DOCM, .DOCX, .DOT, .DOTM and .DOTX. I'd associate .RTF with Word, too. Select the file types in turn and click Change program. Select Microsoft Word in the dialog box. Click OK.

Q: I have a CompactFlash card for my camera. And I have an SD card for my music player. Can I also store data on these cards?
FIND MORE STORIES IN: Microsoft | PayPal | Blogger

A: Yes. I'd purchase a card reader. This will make it easy to load data onto the card. It also makes it easier to retrieve data. Now, when you format the camera card, do it on the camera. Do not use the computer. If you do, it may not work in the camera. The same might be true of the music player's card, too. Follow your player's instructions.

Q: How do you make the printer interrupt printing? I needed to stop mine and grabbed the paper from the tray. I couldn't think of anything else!

A: Sometimes we have to do whatever works, right? Actually, your idea shows quick thinking. I've done that myself. However, the print job is left in queue. It could begin when you restart the printer. Now, here's the correct (but slow) way to stop the printer. Click Start, then Control Panel. In Windows Vista, double-click Printers. In Windows XP, double-click Printers and Faxes. Double-click your printer. Click Printer, then Cancel All Documents. Then be patient. It takes awhile to stop the printing process.

Q: A friend just had a premature baby. I'd like to set up a website and accept donations. How do I do this?

A: I suggest you use a blog. There are many free blogging services. Try Blogger, LiveJournal or WordPress. Accepting donations exclusively takes a few steps. You could handle them through a PayPal account. Sign up for a Premier account. It will allow you to accept completely kinds of payments. Click the Merchant Services tab. Under Create Buttons, click Donate. Fill out the form. Click Create Button. You'll see a box containing HTML code. Copy and paste it into your website. I have the links you
